You can start your Dalmatian coast journey from south Dubrovnik or from norther parts of country, but don't forget to include a visit to Zadar in your itinerary, at least for a night. Why? We are sure you have already read your literature and we can only confirm it was all true.
Zadar is beautiful Dalmatian old town, offering unique experiences you'll hardly find anywhere in the world. We are talking about, lately, the most known attraction, in town Sea Organs and Greeting to The Sun. Go there, sit on that staircase by the sea and just listen. The music produced by waves, while admiring scenic sunset in front of you, will surely inspire you for the rest of the evening!
While in Zadar, we definitely suggest to book a local guide to learn about its interesting monuments and history. Nowadays attractions seem replaced a bit the importance of town's culture and history, and it has so much to tell!
Visit St. Donatus church from 9th century and attend its Musical evenings in that very special atmosphere, explore rich Archeological museum just opposite of St. Donatus; St. Anastasia' Cathedral has origins dated from 4th or 5th century, later developed in Romanesque style in 12th and 13th century. Church of St Mary, with a beautiful Renaissance portal from 16th century, commemorates the entrance of King Coloman of Hungary in Zadar in 1102.
Besides Split, Trogir, Dubrovnik and Šibenik, Zadar has UNESCO site as well - Zadar's City Walls defended the town from Turkish invasions and recently the walls have been recognized to be protected under special UNESCO standards.
Town of Zadar is also a home town of many famous Croatian basketball players, like Krešimir Ćosić or Arijan Komazec and many poets, singers and Croatian language influencers were born there. The town has recognizable University center and offers high quality education on its Studies. Many young Croats choose Zadar for their studies, since the town offers, besides quality programs, nice and calm living by the sea, spiced up with cultural events, educational programs, night life and great places for youth to gather.
Zadar region is worth of visiting as well, google the history of town of Nin and if you visit it in August, you can participate in Salt Festival and learn about its production! Biograd na moru is a town you will reach following Adriatic road south from Zadar. Have a break from the road trip and stop for a coffee break by the sea there. If you want to experience something you don't see every day, and you are in Zadar region - and it is the 10th in the month, early morning, just enter Benkovac on your GPS. That's all we have to say :-)
While in Zadar - don't miss its amazing islands! Dugi otok, Pašman, Ugljan, Ist, Iž, Molat, Olib...each of them is a story for itself. Discover at least one of them while you are staying in the region.
